GameGame

Ludology meets Understanding Comics.

In GameGame, players compete in designing games. Players collect and trade cards in order to create a complete game design. In between, one player gets to play a game publisher, while the other players try to sell their game concepts to her. In the end, the best game design is decided in a vote. Let the best game win!

About

Ph.D. Thesis available

Gwf_cover_image_3
GameGame's conceptual home, my doctoral dissertation on studying and designing games - long in the making - has finally been completed. It is available in my University's electronic series. I am working on splitting the material into two books. I write this in Bergen, Norway, where I'll be tutoring the GameGame workshop for media students for the third year in the row.

Gamegame workshop slides

The above presents an introduction to the Gamegame concept and an outline for a day-long workshop I have been giving on the subject. Feel free to drop a line if you're interested in having me over to give the workshop in your game design or game studies curriculum.

GameGame 2.0 Released

The Cards on a PDF file:

Download GameGame-cards-version2.0-2006-02-20.pdf (5414.3K)

The Manual:

Download GameGame-Manual-version2.0.pdf (5004.4K)

Changes to 1.0
- Card redesign
- Actual manual
- Mechanic card library slightly revised
- Minor rule tweaks, especially concerning the publisher role
- The asset card 'Conference Attendance', i.e. an ability to make a fusion with another player was dropped. It lead to more rules and exceptions, and I felt the game already has quite a lot of social interaction.
- I haven't tried to optimize the PDF for b/w. I suggest you find a color printer!

My plan is to do a update to the site content soon also, but for now, hopefully 2.0 satisfies the incoming requests. Once again, I am eager to hear session reports, and it is something that I hope to facilitate through the site in the future. There's also plans to reward those willing to go to the trouble of organising & posting a session report.

I'll be organizing a workshop with play sessions next Monday at the University of Bergen, thanks to an invitation from Rune Klevjer. Theory meets Design meets Play, that's the GameGame way.

2.0 out soon

Late again, but I'm nearly finished with the update, and I believe it will be substantial enough to call it version 2.0. There will be: a completely new design for the cards, a proper manual, and some rule tweaks. 2.0 will be out on PDF, as usual, but I've tried to make the card PDF more user-friendly. Release in few days. There will also be a catch...just wait :)
